Our bass player, Kyle Klipowicz, has been working extremely hard with the guys in Carnal Torpor to prepare their CalmDome for Chicago’s Smart Gallery, and tonight is the opening. You can get all of the details about where and when this is going on on this facebook event page.

Last Shows For Awhile...

We have two shows coming up in the next 10 days, and they will be the last two at least until November. We’re going to try and take that time to repair a motor in a TASCAM Portastudio-424, write some new songs, play in other bands, and keep searching for a soup that actually fills us up. To be honest, this isn’t really “news”, or something we think you would care about, but it feels sort of significant because the last 6 months or so we’ve been playing a LOT of shows. Since we’re taking a break after these, we decided to try and do something special for them.

The first show coming up is on September 10th at the local collective house / space Ball Hall. We’re playing with our friends Capybara from Kansas City, as well as Chicago lounge-pop band Distractions, in which Royal Osprey members Joey, Jake and Matt are new members. At this show, we’re going to try a style we haven’t quite tried fully…pop music. We’ve been obsessing over Prefab Sprout a bit, specifically their 1985 classic Steve McQueen (click to listen to the whole album), so it feels pretty good to play something sort of in that vein. Not to mention the Todd Rundgren that has been seeping in. And of course, most obviously, it doesn’t hurt that some of us have also, as mentioned above, been playing with Distractions, who do pop quite nicely.

The other show is September 13th at Dr. Who’s Factory of Ideals. We’re playing with our good friends Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk, from Lawrence, KS, who do drone-noise-pop as well as anybody I know. And they are CRAZY INDIVIDUALS. Last time we hung out, Drew jumped off of a garbage can and impaled his arm on a fencepost, ruining his guitar ability for that tour. I think it was their second day of tour, too. It didn’t phase him, however. He told me he was excited to not play guitar. They are excellent people. In their honor and in the honor of all that is loud and distorted, we’re going to take the opportunity to do a noisy, drone-heavy, shoegaze-y set. We’re also going to be putting out a tape of that stuff on Drew’s label, Solid Melts, sometime in the Fall / Winter (remember, we have to fix that motor on the four-track).

So, if you’re free on those days, it would be lovely to see you, as the next time we have a show in Chicago, it’s going to be way too cold to come out and see us.

This is Duane. We just met him tonight, when he came up to us on the front porch to play our guitar. He was amazing. I wish I could have recorded more of him playing, he sang us a song too, and it was super good. We exchanged numbers, and we’ll be playing together in two weeks, after he buys a wide body gibson.

So awesome.

This is the alternate version of “Fayetteville” from our EP Treasure. Recorded in an attic bedroom with all sorts of junk that was lying around, same mic for everything (sorry TW). My favorite bit of this song is the very end. We recorded the television playing the music from the SNES game Earthbound, specifically, the dinosaur museum music. It is so good.
